Measure twice. Choose once.
A few measurements make choosing a garden structure much easier.
Start with the usable footprint
Measure the clear space available after allowing for fences, planting, roof overhangs and access. Nominal product size can differ from its actual footprint. Verify the selected manufacturer drawing before ordering.
Check the door and the route
Measure the largest item you want to store, the clear door opening and the path to the structure. Leave room for the door swing and for moving equipment safely.
Look above and below
Consider tree branches, roof overhang, drainage, slopes and underground services. Ask a qualified local professional about excavation and foundation work.
Check local requirements
Your municipality and homeowners association may have rules for size, setbacks, height and permits. Verify them for the exact product and location; a kit does not automatically mean a permit is unnecessary.
